Valuing Human Differences

Immigrant Entrepreneurs
in Chicago

  • How do the experiences of immigrant entrepreneurs differ or not differ from the experiences of entrepreneurs born in the United States?
  • What obstacles and support do immigrant entrepreneurs encounter when establishing a small business in Chicago?
  • How are these obstacles or support different or similar based on the immigrant entrepreneur's country of origin?

In an effort to answer these questions and to engage in a personal journey of discovery, I interviewed small business owners in Chicago who immigrated from Germany, Taiwan, and Eritrea. I also researched immigration and ethnic entrepreneurship to build a framework for these interviews. This Web site documents my exploration and includes the words and images of the people I met. I hope that you enjoy meeting with them as much as I did.
